Flooding is one of the most destructive natural hazards with severe impacts on communities, infrastructure and economies. This short course explores the key mechanisms behind flooding, including rainfall-runoff processes, floodplain dynamics and urban drainage challenges.

Participants will learn how these processes translate into real-world risks and discover strategies for managing flood impacts through using technical tools and risk assessment frameworks.  This course is designed for anyone seeking a clear, practical understanding of flood risk, and builds essential skills for those working directly or indirectly on flood risk management.

What you will learn

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use the source-pathway-receptor model to evaluate and manage flood risk
  • Use probability and return period calculations to determine flood likelihood and severity
  • Compare different approaches for modelling flood risk, including rainfall-runoff and routing methods
  • Identify and recommend appropriate flood management strategies for rural and urban contexts
  • Calculate basic flood damages for areas at risk of flooding
  • Understand the purpose of flood risk assessments

Core content

  • Weather and flood risk: Understanding the principles of flood types, runoff generation, flood probability and magnitude
  • Flood routing and interventions: How water moves in channels and on the land surface, and what solutions are used to manage risk including engineered and natural flood management
  • Flood Impacts: Assessing socioeconomic and environmental consequences of flood risk, including calculating economic impact of flood risk
  • Flood modelling and forecasting: Tools, techniques, and applications in decision-making
  • Flood Risk Assessments: Methods and policy around mitigating the impacts of flooding
