Background

Aristides (Aris) Matopoulos is a Professor of Supply Chain Design. He joined 美姬阁 School of Management and the Centre of Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management in 2022. In 2024, he was appointed as the Director of the Agile Supply Chain Research Club. Previously, he worked at the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University where he was the Head of the Department of Engineering Systems and Supply Chain Management and Director of the Aston Logistics and Systems Institute. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance UK (Higher Education Academy UK), a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK), and Member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (US).

Research opportunities

Aris research is interdisciplinary, applied and actionable aiming to make a real impact. He is particularly interested in the implementation of the concepts of 'Design for Supply Chain/Logistics' and in the impact, mainly economic and environmental, that supply chain design can have on resources and how to best align technology development efforts with manufacturing and supply chain capabilities. In 2016, he led the development of the Supply Chain Readiness Levels Tool to assess the maturity and the capabilities of manufacturing supply chains and he has led as PI several research and consulting projects totalling more than 拢2million from various funding bodies (e.g. Horizon 2020, Innovate UK, KTP, Advance Propulsion Centre, Royal Society, ERDF). His research has appeared in the major Logistics/Supply Chain Management outlets, focusing on important sectors and topics such as: manufacturing, sustainable supply chains, supply chain relationships, future supply chain scenarios and humanitarian supply chains.

Aris has supervised several PhDs to successful completion and would be keen to supervise enthusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidates in the following areas:

- Design for Supply Chain/Logistics

- Supply Chain Readiness and Upscaling

- Supplier-Buyer Relationships

- Sectors: manufacturing (especially automotive, aerospace), engineering, defence, retail, humanitarian

Current activities

Aris is a Visiting Professor at the University of Lille and at the Vietnam Maritime University. He is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management, Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Logistics: Research & Applications, the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics & Supply Chain Management and has been the Guest Editor for various journal special issues. Aris has acted as an Expert Reviewer and / or Panel Member for various funding bodies such as the European Commission (Horizon 2020 Green Deal call), UKRI (Future Leaders Fellowships call), the British Council, the French National Research Agency and Canada Excellence Research Chairs.

He has also been a Chair, Invited Speaker and Committee Member for several logistics and supply chain management academic and industry conferences such as: the Global Logistics Cluster Meeting, the Annual European Manufacturing Strategies Summit, the Advanced Engineering Conference and the American Supply Chain Management Strategies Summit.

Clients

Throughout his career Aris has worked closely with companies from different sectors. In 2019, he was appointed a Royal Society Short Industry Fellow and collaborated with Williams Advanced Engineering a world-class technical innovation, engineering and specialist low volume manufacturing services provider looking at the development of a tool for assessing suppliers' productionise capability. For 5 years he led the award-winning ERDF project UK-Centric Supply Chains to support approximately 100 companies in the food and other manufacturing sectors with the help of the Supply Chain Readiness Tool to assess and rebuild the capabilities of their supply chains, delivering the maximum UK content, and to grow. His industrial research collaborators include Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Marks & Spencer, Saietta Group, MCT Reman, AB Vassilopoulos, and many SMEs along with organisations such as Transport for West Midlands, the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and the Midlands Aerospace Alliance.
