Background

Dr Lounis Chermak received his Diplome d'Ingenieur in Electrical Engineering from Polytech' Grenoble, France. He then joined ÃÀ¼§¸ó, UK, where he obtained an MSc in Computer Vision and completed a PhD in Visual based Autonomous Systems.

Lounis also held visiting researcher positions at the Physiology of Perception and Action Laboratory, College de France, France and also in the Automation and Robotics Laboratory, at the European Space Research and Technology Center Netherland.

Current activities

Lounis is leading the Joint Autonomy Lab and holds a Lecturer position at the Centre for Electronic Warfare Information and Cyber at ÃÀ¼§¸ó Defence and Security.

His research interest focuses in situational awareness and includes perception, decision-making and mobility of autonomous systems platforms. He specialises in computer vision, sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, robotics and navigation.

Lounis is leading research activities in Robotics and Autonomous Systems supported by staff, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral (PhD) and postgraduate (MSc) research students in various civilians and defence autonomous aerial, ground, maritime and space system applications.

The Joint Autonomy Laboratory is a 200 m2 indoor facility that includes a drone netting, a motion capture system and virtual reality test bench while providing several vehicle platforms ( UAV fleet, ground robot fleet, 2 Electric Vehicles), multiple visual, ranging and motion sensors to support ongoing educational and research applications.
