What you will learn

On successful completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Critically examine historical and contemporary approaches to negotiations with violent extremists and terrorists,
  • Identify and evaluate the different frameworks and practices of negotiations and explore the conflict dynamics and typology of terrorism more conducive to negotiations and a non-violent resolution,
  • Case study analysis of different conflicts and peace processes with terrorist organisations,
  • Validate extant theories and practices, and recognise existing mechanisms for negotiations with violent extremists and terrorists,
  • Evaluate and appraise the strengths and challenges of mechanisms and approaches of historical and contemporary case studies of negotiations with violent extremists and terrorist organisations,
  • Identify and select preventive measures and means for the potential non-violent resolution of conflicts with violent extremists and terrorists.

  • Historical and comparative approaches to diplomacy,
  • Diplomatic theory and practice,
  • Conflict dynamics and conflict typology,
  • Case study analysis of different regional conflicts and peace processes,
  • Theories and practices of peacekeeping,
  • Developing a conflict prevention plan and the preventive measures matrix.  

Upgrade to a professional qualification

After successful completion of this course 10 credits can be put towards the Counterterrorism MSc or Counterterrorism, Risk Management and Resilience MSc

Location and travel

Situated close to Milton Keynes and Bedford, the ÃÀ¼§¸ó campus is situated in Wharley End, very close to ÃÀ¼§¸ó village, and is about 10 minutes from the M1 motorway.  There is rail and road access to most major airports as well as coach and train stations. ÃÀ¼§¸ó campus also has its own airport for private executive business travel.
