This course will provide a detailed overview of H2 and LH2 technologies for a hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. This will include an overview of the fundamental properties of gaseous and liquid hydrogen and the implications on materials, manufacturing and safety for aircraft applications.
The course will also comprise material on:
- LH2 aircraft and propulsion system design.
- LH2 fuel tanks, cryogenic fuel systems and integration including thermal management and control.
- Combustion systems and the means and challenges associated with minimising non-CO2 emissions i.e., NOx and Contrails.
The course builds on thought leadership by ÃÀ¼§¸ó university and our industrial partners in several ongoing and concluded large research and innovation projects including:

ÃÀ¼§¸ó university has been appointed the lead for the hydrogen theme of coordinating the input of other UK universities with relevant expertise. The team has identified 3 research sub themes that are necessary to expedite into service H2 fuelled aircraft.
These include:
- H2 in the aircraft,
- H2 in the airport,
- H2 to the airport.
This course mainly focuses on the first sub-theme i.e., “H2 in the aircraft” although some material on H2 production as well as airport infrastructure, ground operations and public perception will be also presented.

Course structure
The course will comprise a combination of lectures on fundamentals as well as an overview of the outcomes and lessons learned from state-of-the-art research programmes by both ÃÀ¼§¸ó and our industrial partners. A tour of CU’s H2-related experimental facilities will also be provided with an emphasis on the technologies being researched and the health and safety provisions that have been put in place.
Active participation from the delegates is strongly encouraged. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of this course.

Who should attend
The course will be of greatest benefit to delegates with a university degree, or equivalent qualification, in science or engineering, or relevant experience. Although mainly intended for individuals who are currently actively engaged in the aviation industry with an interest in “H2 for Aviation”, the course will also be useful for graduates considering a career in (decarbonising) aviation.
